Global Expertise Meets Modern Practice: Art Conservation Education Partners with Leeum Museum of Art for a 2026 Mist-Lining Workshop

Mist-Lining at Leeum Museum of Art, October 2025

We have some incredibly exciting news to share with our Art Conservation Education community!

This autumn, Art Conservation Education is crossing hemispheres to collaborate with the prestigious Leeum Museum of Art in Seoul, South Korea. Our very own Founder and Director, Kate Seymour, will be leading the inaugural program of the brand-new Leeum Conservation Workshop series.

Running from October 21 to October 23, 2026, this intensive three-day workshop will focus on a critical structural reinforcement technique in contemporary painting conservation: Mist-Lining.

Bridging the Training Gap in Contemporary Conservation

The Leeum Museum of Art is launching this annual, long-term educational platform to share practical skills, foster international exchange, and build a robust global network of conservation professionals.

Historically, opportunities for advanced, hands-on training in contemporary art conservation have been relatively limited in Asia. This workshop series marks a massive step forward, providing a vital venue for learning, collaboration, and skill-sharing among conservation professionals worldwide.

As a leading specialist in the field, Kate Seymour is thrilled to bring her decades of expertise to Seoul. Following her extensive work with the Getty Foundation’s “Conserving Canvas” project, Kate will guide participants through the intricate theory and practice of mist-lining.

Inside the Workshop: What is Mist-Lining?

Mist-Lining is a highly specialized, minimal-intervention technique used to structurally support and stabilize weakened canvas paintings without altering their original texture or appearance.

This intensive, small-group program is designed for practicing conservators with experience in paintings conservation. Over three days, the morning lecture sessions will pivot into afternoon hands-on studio work.

Participants will master each critical stage of the process:

  • Adhesive Preparation & Application: Understanding the delicate chemical balance required for contemporary canvases.

  • Low-Pressure Envelope Systems: Setting up and installing low-pressure systems to safely execute the lining.

  • Case Studies & Treatment Decisions: Examining how varying material characteristics and artwork conditions dictate different conservation approaches.
