Tratteggio is a retouching technique originating in Italy in the mid twentieth century. The concept revolves around the visible identification of areas of retouching at close observation, but becoming invisible at a distance. The technique uses overlapping hatched brushstrokes of pure colours. It is suitable for sculptures and mural paintings but has also been used for traditional easel paintings.
